Diving into Data Science

Confused by the number of bootcamps and possible starting points? This six-week course was the foundation that let you choose.

The course

The second in our series of breaking-into-tech courses, this one aimed at data science and engineering. Twenty people kickstarted their data careers through it.

Six Monday evenings on Zoom, June to August 2022. By the end, participants could write basic Python and Bash, understood the key statistical ideas and libraries, and knew which data roles actually exist so they could aim their studies at the right one.

How it was structured

Theory: coding foundations, data analysis concepts, machine learning and mathematical modelling
Practice: a coding assignment, an exploratory data analysis project and a final machine learning project
Community: a private cohort space on our Slack to discuss material, ask questions and collaborate

Like all our courses, it was open to complete beginners from a Muslim background in the UK. The only real requirement was interest in a maths-based career.

The trainers

Yusra

ML Site Reliability Engineer, Google

PhD in Information Extraction from the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, with years of experience across software development and ML research.

Junaid

Research Scientist, IBM Research

AI and machine learning researcher who previously worked as a data scientist in startups and large-scale retail analytics.

Yusra and Junaid also ran our weekly Machine Learning Club, a show-and-tell over Google Meet that regularly drew both technical and non-technical members.
